For many years, Samba, the Open Source CIFS File, Print, and Authentication server, has helped administrators consolidate authentication domains between Linux and Windows. However, many networks continue to run parallel authorization infrastructures. Historically, Linux sysadmins have been forced either to run NIS or LDAP directories services side-by-side with Active Directory domains to maintain synchronized sets of users and groups Unix or to give up managing accounts altogether. Samba 3.0.23 includes improved support for merging Linux and Windows groups to allow administrators to leverage Windows domain group membership while still being able to locally manage additional Unix users and groups.
