Storix launches backup software for Linux, AIX

Storix on Tuesday introduced software that lets customers back up, migrate and provision new Linux and AIX systems.

The Storix System Backup Administrator version 6 For Linux and AIX (SBAdmin) also provides bare metal restore capability for failed or new systems.

SBAdmin is unlike disk-imaging restore utilities in that it does not require the backup image to be restored to identical hardware. It can migrate images between physical servers and virtual servers and be used to perform system recoveries from servers that have failed or lost their system settings.

The restore process of SBAdmin takes the backup and adapts it to the hardware detected during installation, rebuilding the failed system to its prior state. Restoration from bare-metal can be managed either locally or remotely.

Optional features include data encryption with key management, Oracle database backup integration and backups of Windows and Mac OSX operating systems. SBAdmin supports AIX and Linux on x86, 32- and 64-bit IBM pSeries and HP Itanium 2 systems.

Storix’s software competes with Symantec’s Veritas Bare Metal Restore and IBM’s Tivoli Storage Manager for Backup and Recovery, as well as Unitrend’s Data Protection Unit’s appliance.

The software, which installs on any x86, pSeries or Itanium server or workstation, is available starting at $895 for the network administration component and $395 for each client backup license.
