NetWare and Windows XP SP2

We only purchase HP equipment and all new equipment comes pre-loaded with WinXP SP2. I can not connect/see the NetWare server (NDS 7 with all service packs). I've tried all versions of NetWare client including the latest available from Novell. I've tried the Windows client for NetWare which comes with XP as well. I can't remove SP2 either as the recovery disk is an overlay CD. Any ideas?

The first thing I would look at is disabling the firewall built into XP SP2.  Call up the properties page for your LAN connection on the computer in question, click on the advanced tab and click on settings.   By default, it should be On.  Select Off and click OK.  A reboot of the machine may be necessary for the Novell client to have a clean shot at the network. I have run into more than one problem that seems to have been related to XP's SP2 firewall and your problem sounds similar. 

If disabling the firewall doesn't resolve the problem, see if the latest network card driver is installed on the machine.  Not all drivers will show up on the Windows Update Web site. 

One of these two options should help resolve the problem. But if the problem continues, and there is no difference in services running on the XP machines that work and those that don't, you may need to look at a "clean" install.  Since HP only sent a recovery CD with SP 2 integrated, you will need to get a copy of the XP media without SP2 slipstreamed into it. 

If HP is unable or won't assist you in getting a copy of XP with this criteria, your next stop is to either talk to a Microsoft Fulfillment representative in your country or buy a retail copy of XP outright.

One option to consider, budget and hardware allowing, is to upgradeto at least NetWare 5.x (the latest is 6.5).  This will let you go to native IP for your server communications without having to configure Netware/IP on the server and make the necessary changes on the workstation.
